Welcome to the City of Fullerton Task Force on Homelessness and Mental Health Services MindMixer. This site is designed to solicit your ideas and feedback regarding Fullerton's mentally ill homeless and the services and resources provided to them. » Good idea, but the homeless would have to want to go there. I've heard that a lot of homeless do not choose to sleep in permanent shelters. Also, where would the shelter be located at? I'm betting that if it's a residential area, a lot of neighbors would be fighting placement of it in their neighborhood.
»I wonder what the pro's and cons of this idea of a year round center for homeless. In my mind there would be more cons than pros.It sounds costly and a center like this would attract many people looking for handouts and foster more of a sense of dependence. The idea of having an advocate available is important to talk about issues whether legal or emotional. Its important not to undermine the great efforts already being done by local churches and volunteers. I wonder if a better approach would be to work alongside those groups which are already providing services and to enhance what is already being done.

»I think the idea of putting information in the water bill mailings is a way of introducing the idea of helping the homeless and mentally ill to the public. It also establishes to the public that Fullerton takes this topic seriously.
»This was a frequent suggestion made at the recent Listening Conferences. I thouroughly agree with it. In addition, I would say the public and mental health/social service professionals need to go directly to those on the street instead of waiting till the homeless or mentally ill are in police custody. This would be a more proactive approach.
»FIES already puts out similar information on locations for free dinners to the homeless provided by churches in Fullerton. They are printed on blue 3x5 cards (approx size). I keep a stack of them in my glove compartment of my car and hand them out to homeless people I come in contact with during the week. The same type of card could be printed up with the information suggested in the above comment. If its small enough to keep in a glove compartment or purse they could be used easily by the general public to pass out to homeless.
»I agree with this idea. A 35ish year old woman I interviewed on Tuesday night at the Armory answered the question "If you could have any one thing to improve your situation right now what would it be?" She answered a car. She said she just got a job this last week at the Penny's Distribution center. If she works 2 or more days in a row she has to sleep out of doors...even in the rain in the city where her job is in order to get to work on time. She explained that if she had a car she could drive or even sleep safely in a secluded area. I think Curtis' idea about the asset seizures is a fantastic idea. Thank you Curtis.
»I believe we need another full time shelter further north to help service the communities of La Habra and Buena Park. Is the old Beckman property at Harbor and Lambert a consideration? Even if not all of the property is used I believe part of it could be used. I believe it had a cafeteria area so there would be existing plumbing for food preparation.

A central location that homeless access is the fullerton transportation center.
This might be a good location for a bulletin board similar to the enclosed metrolink information board at the entrance of the train depot.
A bulletin board like this could be posted near the bus terminal which is a frequent transportation point for many needy people.(A location on the corner is already being increasingly recognized by community and homeless as a location to give or receive small clothing or food items.)

»Consolidate the PowerPoint information into a glovebox-friendly brochure so that Fullerton motorists have the contacts and resources available when they see someone who might need help.
